The Houston Bar Association sponsors LegalLine, a service where you can call in and talk to a volunteer attorney and get free legal advice.

LegalLine is a twice a month community service outreach program of the Houston Bar Association that has served the Houston area since 1985. This FREE legal advice hotline is designed to help the public get simple legal advice, answers to legal questions and referrals to helpful resources over the telephone. All calls are answered by licensed volunteer attorneys.

Reach a volunteer attorney by calling 713-759-1133 every first and third Wednesday of every month from 5pm to 9pm.

My ex-boyfriend verbally agreed to pay me back the $150 he owes me, and now he doesn’t want to, what can I do?

It’s a great question for the hotline. Additionally, Richard Alderman runs the People’s Law School, a semi-annual event at the University of Houston where law students and lawyers are available to answer legal questions. It’s coming up. Check the website for details. Since I’m not a lawyer yet, I can’t advise you as one, but cases involving sums lower than $5,000 are typically tried in JP Courts (Justice of the Peace) and don’t require a lawyer to represent you. Here’s the website for JP Courts in Houston.

I am in the process of buying a vehicle that is still being financed. I let my insurance collapse. The vehicle was stolen and now has been recovered. The recovered vehicle is in poor condition at a storage facility. I advised the financial institution where recover the vehicle. The financial institution is stating that A) I need to pay off the balance or B) If they pick up the vehicle, it will have to show up as a repo on my credit. How should I handle the situation?

Just to be clear, I’m not yet a lawyer and can’t give legal advice or offer legal representation. It sounds like a perfect question for LegalLine though. Here’s how to get in touch with a lawyer over there:
