Over at the Volokh Conspiracy, Eugene Volokh takes note of the 1949 pic Adam’s Rib, starring Spencer Tracy and Kathryn Hepburn playing a married lawyer couple and jokingly surmises that there might now be a legal obligation for lawyers to marry other lawyers. I would assume such a rule would be for the sake of the non-lawyer, for whom being tied to someone who has been taught to ‘think like a lawyer’ could only amount to cruel and unusual punishment.I would venture to say that there are some decent arguments for a compelling state interest in not allowing lawyers to marry outside their caste, though that is likely offset by a countervailing consideration noted by Jim Lindgren, Adam’s Rib: “Idiot children and more lawyers.”:
“Lawyers should never marry other lawyers. This is called inbreeding, from which comes idiot children and more lawyers.”
As a future-lawyer dating another future-lawyer I can only say that we probably deserve each other, although I would never even attempt what the Spencer Tracy character gets away with. Different times…
