A Prairie Home Companion Movie

Garrison Keillor and his radio show the Prairie Home Companion are familiar to anyone who has listened to PBS in the last 30 years. Keillor and director Robert Altman (M*A*S*H and Nashville) teamed up to create a movie based on the show. The premise of Keillor’s script is suitably Altman-esque – we see the radio show performed as it has been every week for 30 years, in front of a live audience at St. Paul’s Fitzgerald Theater, in what turns out to be its final night, as the show has been unexpectedly cancelled by a Texas radio executive (Tommy Lee Jones as the Axeman).

The cast includes Garrison Keillor, Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Lindsay Lohan, Kevin Kline, Woody Harrelson, John C. Reilly, Virginia Madsen, Tommy Lee Jones.

This is what a Honda sounds like…

I’ll take their word for it. While we’re on the subject, check out this unbelievable Rube Goldberg-inspired Honda commercial.

Deepa Mehta’s movie Water

Water_POSTER.jpg

Indian filmmaker Deepa Mehta’s new movie Water is now in theaters. The third of her elements trilogy, the original filming of Water in India was prevented by violent protests by Hindu extremists who destroyed the set and burned images of Mehta in effigy. Mehta took up the script again five years later and relocated the shoot to Sri Lanka with a different cast. Seeing Salman Rushie interview Deepa Mehta on the Charlie Rose Show finally pushed me over the edge to put this one on the list of things to see in the theaters.

Water is currently playing at the Landmark River Oaks Theater. Click for showtimes. Google Map It.

WikiLuke

Geekiness knows no humility. If it wasn’t vainglorious enough to have an eponymous website, I’ve just added WikiLuke to the mix. A wiki is a free for all style of website format. Every page in the site is editable by anyone, yes even you, as ill-considered as that may be. Blather away.

Consider it the town-hall forum of lukegilman.com. I’ve started off with a list of movies – my favorites, merely notables and a list of things I want to see. I would particularly appreciate it if you would add to that last one. I’ve gotten really out of touch since leaving Emerson.

I’m planning on adding pages for music, books, etc, but feel free to use or abuse the wiki for whatever…

Filmmaker Errol Morris

Errol Morris is a very interesting guy, so it makes sense that he would have an equally interesting website. I discovered Morris through Thin Blue Line (1988), one of the most remarkable documentaries I’ve ever seen. Long story short, the publicity of the film helped get a wrongly convicted man off death row. If you haven’t seen it yet, it needs to be on your list of things to do this weekend.

Some of the more interesting items on the site are the Aborted Projects, including video footage

The Movie Movie, an aborted project, is based on the idea of taking Donald Trump, Mikhail Gorbachev and others and putting them in the movies they most admire. Isn’t it possible that in an alternative universe Donald Trump actually starred in Citizen Kane?

Also check out the Academy Awards Movie and the commercials, so many of which I recognize it makes me wonder what other great directors work I’m fast-forwarding through on my Tivo.

Sidney Lumet, Vin Diesel, Find Me Guilty

Sidney Lumet is one of those directors whose career may be more fascinating than his movies. Charlie Rose interviews director Sidney Lumet on his new movie Find Me Guilty. I started to realize why I feel this way when I heard this quote,

The thing is this, that, I don’t what the result is gonna be, I don’t even know what the result is going to be creatively. We know how to lay the groundwork for it, but whether or not it happens, and I think you’ll get this answer from everyone who has done a good movie, is accidental.

The one thing that matters to me, from the beginning, is the process.

Vin Diesel is another fascinating character, woefully underestimated in intelligence and talent because of his image and career in action movies.
