Houston Cougars go Bowling in our own backyard, soon to be Coach-less?

The same week the University of Houston Cougars accepted an invitation to play in their hometown Texas Bowl on Dec. 28, held in Houston at Reliant Stadium, it was announced that Houston head coach Art Briles is a front-runner for the newly vacant job in Waco. Baylor fired coach Guy Moriss following their 12th straight losing season and a winless year in the Big 12. Briles interviewed with Baylor’s AD today in Dallas. From the Houston Chronicle:

“Art asked for permission to talk to Baylor, and I said OK,” said UH athletic director Dave Maggard. “We talked about it. I asked if he really felt that he needed to do this, and he said that it was something he needed to do. I told him that I wanted him to stay in Houston. That was it.”

Say it ain’t so, Art. Or if it is so, at least win us a damn bowl game before you go.

Kevin Kolb started 50 consecutive games as quarterback for the University of Houston, third most in NCAA history, and closed his career ranked first at UH in yards (12,964), attempts (1,565) and completions (964), and second to David Klingler with 85 touchdown passes. Now Kolb is off to the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and head coach Art Briles is looking for a new pair of hands under center for the first time in four years.

ESPN: Hoops of Nazareth

ESPN has a great in-depth article on Hoops of Nazareth. It’s a great story, as much about the town as girls hoops. Worth the read.

XC-skiing at the Frisco Nordic Center

I just got back from seeing if I could remember how to cross-country ski. I do remember how, however, I’m just too out of shape to do it very well anymore. BBQ is the devil’s own invention.

I headed out to the Frisco Nordic Center between Frisco and Breckenridge. It’s a great facility; trails were well-groomed and plentiful, busy but not crowded.

The rental equipment they gave me ($20 for the day) was better than the stuff I raced on in high school.

My only word of warning to anyone considering the trip – the altitude change will kick your ass. I’ve been getting winded just going up and down the stairs.

Tickets on Sale for the Houston College Classic

If you like baseball there’s no better event than the College Classic. I went last year and sat in every section of Minute Maid Park. Just for the record I’ve got to go with 1st base line as the best seat in the house. I’ll be cheering on the Coogs all three days as they take on a field of teams including Baylor University, Rice University, Arizona State and Texas A&M. (via Houston’s Clear Thinkers)

Get your tickets for the Houston College Classic, $30 for all three days.
