Now with 110% More Twittering

Once again my best laid plans to attend SXSW Interactive festival were foiled, this time by some gaping research holes in my appellate brief for my Legal Research & Writing class. Ah, the joys of lawstudentdom.

I hear Twitter was all the rage, however, and have consoled myself in its willing arms. As updating your status on Facebook or IM is to recreational mary jane, Twitter is to freebasing crack cocaine. I’m not alone in this assessment.

Twitter exists to communicate one thing to the rest of the world – ‘what you are doing?’ It accomplishes this by allowing you to update your status via web, cellphone, and IM. It adds a social element by giving you options on updating your friends with your status and getting their status updates in return. The Twitter Home Page has a running example of the collective nature. I’ll be back with updates if it manages to work its way into my personal technology ecology.

Robert Earl Keen singing Merry Christmas from the Family at Gruene Hall

YouTube is blowing me away. Where else can you find stuff like this? Thornson’s got it right on – ‘It’s like seeing Pele play sandlot soccer in Brazil.’

Three Things You Don’t Know About Aids In Africa

University of Chicago Economist and Becker Fellow Emily Oster has an interesting article in Esquire, Three Things You Don’t Know About Aids In Africa

Approximately 6 percent of adults in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with HIV; in the United States, the number is around 0.8 percent. Very often, this disparity is attribu ed to differences in sexual behavior—in the number of sexual partners, the types of sexual activities, and so on. But these differences cannot, in fact, be seen in the data on sexual behavior. So what actually accounts for the gulf in infection rates?

According to my research, the major difference lies in transmission rates of the virus. For a given unprotected sexual relationship with an HIV-infected person, Africans are between four and five times more likely than Americans to become infected with HIV themselves. This stark fact accounts for virtually all of the difference in population-wide HIV rates in the two regions.

You’ll just have to read the article to find out what the other two things are.

Bagged Cat

Speaking of cats. My seemingly innocuous post Machine Gun Cat is by far the most popular think on my site which irks me to no end.

This, however, is genuinely funny.

Before you freak out and get all PeTA on me, I have nothing to do with the making of the picture, swanksalot took it and says the cat actually enjoys riding around in plastic bags.

Office Cat

I have a new office mate. He, she or it is not mine. So far all it does is stare at me and then run away when I move or make any kind of noise.

Worms in Africa

My friend Julie has been working at a mission in Kenya for a couple of years now. I love posts like these. I’m sure she could do without them.

I woke up Sunday morning to worms crawling out of my bathroom sink. It just might be one of the sickest things i’ve ever seen. I felt like i was in a horror movie. I stood bent over my sink for about 3 hours turning the water off and on trying to wash them away. About 10 minutes after they would wash away, dozens of tiny heads would start squirming through the holes in my drain. I can barely even type this w/out getting faint. I found some clorox like powder stuff that i hoped would kill them. i poured it all in my sink. That didn’t work, it just gave me white worms. Then i found some sink declogger stuff. The bottle said to wear gloves, hold it away from your body and only use two tablespoons. Surely that would kill them, right? Nope. After about 10 minutes, squirmy little heads appeared (vomit). SO i went ahead and poured the entire (new) bottle down my sink. I’d rather my sink blow up then have worms. Needless to say, I didn’t make it to church that morning,I didn’t sleep well that night and my sink drains very well now. Safari ants shooting out of my showerhead i can handle, worms I can’t.

Keeping Cool with Cool Collars

We’ve had it pretty mild in Houston this summer, relatively speaking. From what I’ve heard Kansas and other parts of the midwest have had record-breaking heatwaves. This site offers a cheap, simple solution when air conditioning isn’t an option. Cool Collar makes terry-cloth wraps to keep ice in.
