Random Factoid – First College Building built with Air Conditioning at University of Houston

roy-gustave-cullen-building.jpg

Pictured above is the University of Houston campus in 1940. I ran across this factoid while researching something for another post:

The University of Houston moved to its present campus in 1939. Its first building, the Roy Gustav Cullen Building, was dedicated on June 4, 1939, and classes began the next day. The R.G. Cullen building is believed to be the first college building built with air conditioning anywhere in the world. (Wikipedia: The University of Houston)

This is, of course, if you’ve spent any time at all in Houston, about the least surprising thing you’ve ever heard.

Houston Cougars Gear Up for New Season, First New QB in 4 Years

houston-kevin-kolb.jpg

Kevin Kolb started 50 consecutive games as quarterback for the University of Houston, third most in NCAA history, and closed his career ranked first at UH in yards (12,964), attempts (1,565) and completions (964), and second to David Klingler with 85 touchdown passes. Now Kolb is off to the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and head coach Art Briles is looking for a new pair of hands under center for the first time in four years.

Vassar Miller’s ‘Christmas Mourning’

Vassar Miller‘s “Christmas Mourning”

On Christmas Day I weep
Good Friday to rejoice.
I watch the child asleep.
Does He half dream the choice
The Man must make and keep?

At Christmastime I sigh
For my Good Friday Hope.
Outflung the Child’s arms lie
To span in their brief scope
The death the Man must die.

Come Christmastide I groan
To hear Good Friday’s pealing.
The Man, racked to the bone,
Has made His hurt my healing,
Has made my ache His own.

Slay me, pierced to the core
With Christmas penitence
So I who, new-born, soar
To that Child’s innocence,
May wound the Man no more.

Tickets on Sale for the Houston College Classic

If you like baseball there’s no better event than the College Classic. I went last year and sat in every section of Minute Maid Park. Just for the record I’ve got to go with 1st base line as the best seat in the house. I’ll be cheering on the Coogs all three days as they take on a field of teams including Baylor University, Rice University, Arizona State and Texas A&M. (via Houston’s Clear Thinkers)

Get your tickets for the Houston College Classic, $30 for all three days.

Another Bowl Loss….

frowning-cougar.gif

The Houston Cougars went down 44-36 to the South Carolina Gamecocks. A gamecock, if you didn’t know, is a “strong, colorful, and territorial type of chicken.” Knowing that only makes me feel marginally better. Exciting game, good finish, blah blah blah blah blah… another bowl loss is all it is to me.

University of Houston Basketball releases 2006-2007 Schedule

apcacunrr_ARIZONA_HOUSTO_1C649-lg.jpg

Tom Penders has done a lot to revive the spirits of UH basketball in the 2 years he’s been head coach with a 21-10 season last year with wins against top 25 teams LSU and Arizona. This year promises similar opportunity with games against powerhouse programs Kentucky, Arizona, and Memphis which made it to last year’s Final Four.

Introducing the Blawg

Starting May 30th, 2006 I’ll be a 1L in the evening program at the University of Houston Law Center in Houston, TX.

I’ve been blogging for a couple of years now with my own High on the Hog Blog and as a regular contributor to Metroblogging Houston so it only made sense that I would join the blawgosphere as well.

My plan is to post on the law school experience, specifically at the University of Houston, as well as relevant legal and community news. If you’re a blawger, particularly in and around Houston, please let me know and I’ll add a link to your site to my blawgroll. I’m also considering a separate website project that would aggregate the RSS feeds of law-related blogs in across Houston and possibly Texas as a whole.

Questions or feedback, I would love to hear from you. The comments are open or e-mail me.
